Billboard and Vibe have named multi-award-winning rapper and business mogul Jay Z the Greatest Of All Time in the history of Rap Music.
Tupac, Nas, Lil Wayne, Kendrick Lamar, Kanye West, Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Drake, and Jay Z are among the rappers named on the list by Billboard and Vibes.
Who is the greatest rapper of all time has been a source of debate for years, ever since the genre made waves in Western countries, particularly the United States.
Hip Hop has been a part of the music scene for over 50 years, producing legends in their respective countries who have had an impact on rap music.
Other female rappers who made on list are Nicki Minaj, Missy Elliot, MC Lyte, and Queen Latifah have been raising the bar and cementing their names with their unique styles, winning prestigious awards when hoping on songs.
However, on Wednesday, February 8, 2023, Billboard and Vibe ranked the artists who fell under the Greatest Of All Time Rapper category based on the genre’s foundational pioneers and artists who have been consistent since their breakthrough.
Speaking on the list Billboard and Vibe say:
“So it took a lot of deliberation and deep discussion to reason our way to what we believe is a well-thought-out, authentic list that reflects hip-hop’s foundational pioneers, evolutionary trailblazers, and contemporary mainstays. In addition, that mix also encompasses 50 years of cultural milestones for a genre initially
dismissed as a passing fad — and now recognized as the industry’s market-share leader.”
Rick Ross, who has been in the music industry for a decade, is ranked 50th, Lauren Hill, a celebrated rapper and musician, is ranked 30th, and commercial rapper and businessman 50 Cent is ranked 17th
Kanye West, a generational talent and sound shaper, curiously failed to crack the top 10 as he is ranked 11th.
Top 10 Greatest Rappers : Nicki Minaj is the highest-ranking female on the list with a No. 10 ranking whiles Best-selling rapper of all time Drake is ranked No. 8.
Lil Wayne is ranked at No. 7 with his masterful lyrics and mind-blowing verse. Famous rappers and rivals Notorious B.I.G and Tu Pac are ranked No. 6 and No. 4 respectively.
